  • About Evita

Check your Evita tickets before you head to the Marquis Theatre – performances typically start at 8pm, but the curtain rises at 7pm on Tuesdays. Evita tickets are also available for Wednesday matinees.

Composer Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyricist Tim Rice's 1979 musical drama is arguably the best and savviest of the famed songwriting team's portfolio. The original Broadway production launched the careers of title star Patti LuPone (Gypsy) and costar Mandy Patinkin (Sunday in the Park with George). In 1996 the musical was famously made into a sprawling film starring Madonna and featuring the Academy Award-winning song "You Must Love Me," penned by Webber especially for the movie. The current revival at the Marquis Theatre marks the first time Evita has been seen on a Broadway stage in over 30 years.

The show utilizes a variety of up-tempo rock songs and delicate Argentine tangos, as well as Latin and athletic show dance, to tell the true story of Argentine icon Eva Duarte Peron, who followed her ambition out of poverty and into Buenos Aires' Casa Rosada as the First Lady of Argentina in the 1940s. Evita focuses heavily on Eva's use of sex, social manipulation and political savvy to rise through Argentina's elite, where she met and fell in love with ascending military star Colonel Juan Peron. The show goes on to chronicle the pair's passionate seduction, dynamic climb to the offices of President and First Lady and the politically powerful marriage they shared until Evita’s death at age 33. Though their politics raised questions about morality — rumors of corruption and creative accounting marred their presidential reign — Evita and Juan were, and remain, the most famous celebrity couple in Argentine history. Evita is best known for contemporary pop musical-theater standards like "Don't Cry for Me Argentina" and "Another Suitcase in Another Hall."

Evita's current Broadway revival opened with megawatt marquee names. The cast, one of the largest presently on Broadway, was led by Grammy Award-winner and international superstar Ricky Martin as narrator Che, Tony Award-winner Michael Cerveris as Juan Peron (in a performance that earned him his fifth Tony Award nomination) and Argentine stage and screen darling Elena Roger in the title role. The revival notably departs from the original by focusing on the love story between Peron and Eva, rather than fixing its sights solely on the ambition that led to Evita’s rise.

  • True lovers of musical theater will be thankful for Evita’s return to Broadway. The classic’s famous and exotic score, which has been re-orchestrated specifically for this production, is operatic in its structure (read: there is very little spoken dialogue), meaning audiences will enjoy over two hours of non-stop singing and dancing. That being said, don’t let the word “operatic” scare you — Evita is anything but stodgy. Its bold choreography, featuring sultry Argentine tangos and high-octane production numbers performed by a cast of 25+ performers, earned a 2012 Tony Award nomination.

    Good for kids?
Evita features adult themes and mild profanity. It is best suited for mature tweens and adults looking for musical theater classics and ripped-from-the-headlines drama.
