    About Jersey Boys

Jersey Boys tickets for some shows sell out well in advance. For best availability, try buying tickets for weeknights or book ahead.

Jersey Boys, winner of the 2006 Tony award for Best Musical, is a documentary-style jukebox musical in every sense. The show’s story and its songs together tell the tale of New Jersey boys from the wrong side of the tracks who became The Four Seasons, one of the most popular musical acts of the 1960s. The show is directed by Des McAnuff, written by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice, with music by Bob Gaudio and lyrics by Bob Crewe.

In the opening scene of Jersey Boys, playing at the August Wilson Theatre, a French hip-hop crew storms the stage, rapping a song familiar to audiences everywhere and of every age, even in an unfamiliar tongue: “Ces soirées-là,” otherwise known by its original name, “December 1963 (Oh What A Night).” You know the music of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons – this modern scene suggests. What follows reveals the lesser-told story behind it all.

This documentary-style jukebox musical aptly tells its tale over four seasons, with each season narrated by one of band members: lead troublemaker Tommy DeVito, quirky and loyal Nick Massi, musical wunderkind Bob Gaudio and, of course, the diminutive Frankie Valli, whose dreamy falsetto lead vocals would go on to define the band’s inimitable style. Jersey Boys weaves in much of the group’s classic hits, including “Sherry,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” and “Walk Like a Man” as well as post-Four Seasons songs like Gaudio-Valli smash “Let’s Hang On! (To What We’ve Got)” and Valli’s breakout hit “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You,” as well as popular tunes of the day like “My Boyfriend’s Back” by The Angels.

Imagine The Sopranos on Broadway, set to music, and you’ll have some idea of what Jersey Boys is all about: mob ties, gambling addiction, infidelity, loan sharks, crippling debt and mismanaged money, divorce, death, plus the painful estrangement of life on the road. The drama The Four Seasons lived was far deeper than their pop songs would suggest.

After opening on Broadway in 2005, Jersey Boys garnered mass acclaim from audiences and critics alike. As Ben Brantley of The New York Times wrote: “Everything that has led up to that curtain call feels, for just a second, as real and vivid as the sting of your hands clapping together.” Jersey Boys went on to win four Tony Awards that year, as well as two Drama Desk Awards and a Grammy Award for best musical show album. A national tour and stagings in London, Chicago, Las Vegas, Melbourne and Toronto have brought New Jersey to life across the globe.

  • Fans of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons are guaranteed to love this show, but any music fan will appreciate the classic songs and tumultuous story of four average guys who climb their way to the top – and struggle with the reality of being there. Jersey Boys is filled with lights, song and dance, so Broadway fans will not be disappointed with this dramatic night at the theater. Anyone from or with ties to New Jersey – clichés and all – will be tickled.

    Good for kids?
On the way into the theater, a sign warns that “Jersey language” is used in the show, and they’re right – there is a considerable amount of profanity. Some scenes include sexually suggestive dialogue and the loss of a character’s virginity is strongly implied and discussed with innuendos. Children under five are not admitted to the theater, but children over 12 whose parents deem the language appropriate will enjoy the dynamic staging and catchy tunes.
