To paraphrase Mary Poppins’ famous song, this family-friendly Broadway show isn’t just a spoonful of sugar – it’s heaping buckets of it.

With six productions produced on three continents, Mary Poppins – which premiered at the Prince Edward Theatre in London’s West End December 2004 – is one of the biggest stage musical successes to emerge in recent years. To date, the show has grossed over $731 million, been seen by more than 10 million people and has won 44 major theatre awards worldwide.

The spirited musical Mary Poppins, based on the popular Disney film and original books by P.L. Travers, tells the beloved tale of the super-nanny who flies in on her umbrella to make things right – or at least “practically perfect” – on Cherry Lane. With her firm stride and twinkling eyes, the “tough-love” Mary Poppins descends on the troubled Banks family to take charge of the precocious Jane and Michael. And this is where the adventures begin: In the children’s room, as Jane and Michael look on with wide eyes, Poppins begins to unpack her seemingly innocuous carpet bag. But what does she pull out? A hat stand. And a lamp. A leafy plant. A mirror. As Michael Banks says, “I told you she was tricky!”

The musical, for all its cheery music, doesn’t shy away from the Banks family dysfunction. And that’s a good thing, because it adds depth and pathos to the show. The preoccupied and distant Mr. Banks prioritizes his bank job over his family, while Mrs. Banks anxiously trails her husband while dealing with her own self-identity.

In the end, the magic of Mary is as much about her flying powers as it is about her emotional ones. The father learns that the Banks are more important than the bank; Mrs. Banks realizes her own potential; and the children become good-mannered – not because they have to, but because they want to. And Mary Poppins? In the grand finale, she sails over the heads of the audience, flashing her big smile and holding her trademark umbrella. If there’s ever a time that kids will believe in magic, this is it.

Perhaps one of the musical’s greatest assets is its richly detailed Victorian set, designed by Bob Crowley, for which it won a Tony Award. The musical’s home is also impressive: Mary Poppins is staged in the historical, Beaux-Arts New Amsterdam Theatre.

The critics have given Mary Poppins high marks. As USA Today opined: “Irresistible! Broadway has found a fresh fountain of youth that will make many a grown-up feel like a kid again.” In a word: It’s supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.
