About Heathers the Musical
Based on the 1989 cult film starring Wynona Ryder and Christian Slater, Heathers the Musical is a riotously funny satire on high-school politics and the lengths kids will go to be popular. Teenage misfit Veronica Sawyer longs to fit in with the most socially prominent clique at Westerberg High, a group of mean girls all named Heather. After she is finally admitted to the exclusive club, she falls in love with moody rebel J.D. and is promptly booted out. At first Veronica attempts to get back in with the Heathers, but J.D. has other, more murderous ideas.
This hilarious and homicidal comedy features book, music, and lyrics by Kevin Murphy (Reefer Madness, Desperate Housewives) and Laurence O’Keefe (Bat Boy, Legally Blonde) and direction by Andy Fickman (Reefer Madness, She’s the Man).
The New York Post calls it “ingenious, naughty, and very funny. Heathers still cliques.” “A rowdy guilty pleasure,” cheers the New York Times.
Two hours and 15 minutes (one intermission)
There is a concession stand outside the theater with soda and snacks; the seating capacity is 499; New World Stages features five separate theaters as well as a bar.
Did you know?
Brad Pitt auditioned for the role of J.D. in the movie, but was not cast because he was considered “too nice.”
Heathers the Musical comes to New York after a sold-out engagement in Los Angeles. Andy Cohen, host and executive producer of Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live, and Hasty Pudding, the Harvard University-based theatrical troupe, are among the producers.
Fans of the cult movies and anyone who revels in edgy, satiric humor will want to join this clique.
Good for kids?
Teenagers will love this parody of high-school life, but it might be too violent for young children.
