Millions of fans have thrilled to the Academy Award-winning Best Picture. And now, Sylvester Stallone, the man who brought that film to life as its writer and star, is the producer of a thrilling new Broadway musical Rocky.
Stallone has assembled a high-powered theatrical team to bring his vision to life. The show features music and lyrics by the Tony nominated team of Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens (Ragtime, Once on This Island) and a book by Tony winner Thomas Meehan (Hairspray, The Producers, Annie). The director is fast-rising theatrical star and Tony nominee Alex Timbers (Peter and the Starcatcher, Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson), and the show features choreography by Tony nominee Steven Hogett (Once).
The much-loved story of a tough Philadelphia boxer who gets a shot to go the distance against impossible odds, Rocky is also a powerful love story, as two outsiders grapple in their own way to find romance in a complicated world.
The running time has not been announced.
Did you know?
Rocky was originally produced in Germany to great acclaim, with the Bild raving, “Rocky knocks Hamburg out” and Spiegel Online cheering, “The competition among musicals is tough, but this boxer epic can win.”
The show features an original score, along with hit songs from the movie franchise like “Eye of the Tiger” and “Gonna Fly Now.”
One of the show’s highlights is the boxing sequences, which involve full-body contact to simulate real-life boxing as closely as possible.
This is one of those rare Broadway musicals that should appeal to both men and women. Guys will love the action sequences, and women will be drawn into the all-too-human characters and complex love story.
Good for kids?
Though not extremely violent, there’s realistic boxing, so this is most appropriate for kids 13 and over.
