About The Real Thing
Film stars Ewan McGregor and Maggie Gyllenhaal make their Broadway debuts in the Roundabout Theater Company’s revival of Tom Stoppard’s The Real Thing. Tony winner Cynthia Nixon (Rabbit Hole, Sex and The City) also stars in this dazzling romantic drama about love, art, and the thin line between reality and illusion.
McGregor stars as Henry a married dramatist whose off-stage life parallels his writing as he embarks on an adulterous affair with Annie (Gyllenhaal) an actress. To complicate matters, Henry’s wife Charlotte (Nixon) is starring in play about infidelity, a hit on London’s West End.

The Real Thing opened in London in 1982, starring Roger Rees as Henry, and then played Broadway in 1984. That production ran for 566 performances and won five Tonys including Best Play, Best Director (Mike Nichols), Actor (Jeremy Irons as Henry), Actress (Glenn Close as Annie) and Featured Actress (Christine Baranski as Charlotte). A Broadway revival in 2000 won Tonys for Best Revival and Actor (Stephen Dillane as Henry).
This is McGregor's Broadway debut, but the actor has appeared on the London stage in Othello and Guys and Dolls, receiving an Olivier nomination for the latter.
When she was appearing in the original Broadway producion of The Real Thing, Cynthia Nixon was simultaneously acting in David Rabe’s Hurlyburly. In Hurlyburly, her character only appeared in the beginning and at the end, while she was only present as Henry and Charlotte’s daughter Debbie during the middle of The Real Thing.

The subject mattter of this sophisticated comedy-drama is too mature for small children. Mature teenagers should be able to handle it.
