About Chambers Hotel
Most hotels incorporate art into their decor. Few attain the level of the Chambers Hotel, which hosts more than 500 original pieces by emerging and established artists. Each floor features its own installation by artists like John Waters, Sheila Pepe and John Newsom, whose pieces favor colorful flowers and fruits.
The designer David Rockwell brought his heightened sense of style to the interiors, with a bi-level lobby that emphasizes its wide-open space and resembles a massive art gallery, with picture windows, strikingly modern furniture, rich woods and oversized sculptures. Guests can immerse themselves in the art on the inviting mezzanine level, with its comfy couches and coffee-table books on art and photography.
Upstairs, the high-ceilinged rooms could double as Tribeca lofts. Rockwell has merged an industrial edge with top-level comfort, including plush beds with Frette linens and minimalist bathrooms with rainfall showerheads (taking a shower is a pleasure – the water comes out hot, strong and evenly distributed). All the best amenities are on hand: Wi-Fi, wall-mounted flat-screen TVs, large desks, Dean & Deluca snacks and even complimentary iPads and laptops. The DVD lending library offers a deep and varied selection of films, from classics to contemporary indie fare.
The neighborhood offers plenty of cultural flavor, too, with MoMA, Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center nearby and Central Park just a few blocks up.
Not surprisingly, the restaurant at the Chambers is as hip as the hotel. Má Pêche, helmed by celebrity chef David Chang, is known as the “Momofuku of Midtown.” Try oysters and crab legs from the raw bar, followed by succulent pork belly.
