About the Gem Hotel – Chelsea, an Ascend Collection Hotel
The aptly named Gem Hotel – Chelsea is a little jewel box of a hotel, located in the midst of Chelsea, one of Manhattan's most vibrant neighborhoods.
With 81 rooms spread out over six stylish floors, the Gem Hotel – Chelsea is perfect for travelers (or "staycationers") looking for a chic boutique experience. From the street, the hotel looks like a brick building from days gone by (which it is). But the lobby's wood-paneled ceiling, ultra-modern furnishings and friendly reception staff quickly make it obvious that there's nothing remotely dated about this place.
With its muted lighting, dramatically spotlighted orchids and tasteful charcoal walls, just walking down the hallways can be a glamorous experience. Guests have several room choices – standard (which comes with a full-sized bed), queen, business or the penthouse, which has an amazing view of the Empire State Building from its deck.
Rooms are tasteful and just bright enough, with off-white walls, crisp white linens and the Gem's signature silhouettes on the wall. Each compact room comes with a large flat-screen TV, a small desk and free Wi-Fi. The bathrooms are compact and well-designed with funky fixtures and subway tiles, and come stocked with Gilchrist & Soames toiletries.
Business travelers, especially those who work with graphics, will appreciate the Gem's business center, which includes both a PC and a Mac workstation and complimentary printing. The fitness center is small but includes an elliptical, treadmill and some weights.
All guests share a large outdoor rooftop seating area, perfect for working or snacking al fresco.

Whether you have a hankering for ice-skating, swimming, batting a ball or pumping iron, the Chelsea Piers has it all and is just a few blocks west of the Gem hotel.
The recently revitalized High Line is a Chelsea must-see. What was once a dilapidated elevated train line is now a uniquely beautiful park.
Chelsea's Rubin Museum is a little gem unto itself with its incredible collection of Himalayan artwork.
Tourists looking for a boutique experience will love the stylish accommodations, while business travelers will appreciate the free Wi-Fi and choice of PC or Mac computers in the business center. The Gem Hotel – Chelsea bills itself as a gay-friendly property, which makes sense as it's located in one of New York City's premiere gay neighborhoods.
