About Holiday Inn Manhattan Sixth Avenue
Many of the chain hotels are clustered around Midtown and Times Square, but, refreshingly, that’s not the case with the Holiday Inn Manhattan Sixth Avenue. The hotel is in Chelsea, on West 26th Street, a neighborhood that has considerably more local flavor than the big-brand commercialism of Midtown. Spend an afternoon in Chelsea shopping at small boutiques, stopping by a mom-and-pop flower shop, refueling over espresso at Joe the Art of Coffee and then trying a salted-caramel donut at the Doughnut Plant, one of New York’s finest indie purveyors of fried dough. Also a bonus: Chelsea is right between Midtown and Downtown, so you have good access to both neighborhoods. Penn Station is a short walk north, while the Flatiron District, Madison Square Park and Union Square are en route as you make your way downtown. This wedge of the city is also well-connected by the subway.
The rooms, though snug, are signature Holiday Inn: comfortable beds with crisp linens, a sizeable desk with ergonomic chair, clean bathrooms and free Wi-Fi. Some rooms have views of the Empire State Building – ask for one when you book.
Also a highlight is the Prime Café, the family-owned on-site restaurant and café, which serves breakfast, lunch and dinner and has a small greenhouse-style area with outdoor seating. The menu is straightforward but fresh, with Italian accents – pastas, seafood, grilled chicken, wraps, burgers and salads. The restaurant also offers a good-value weekday lunch special from noon-3pm. Plus, the chefs are happy to accommodate kids, and can tailor dishes to picky palates.
The hotel has a couple of computers for use for guests, but the staff is also helpful in directing business travelers to nearby services, like the FedEx/Kinkos that’s a few blocks south of the hotel. Also, Midtown is no more than three stops away by subway, making it easy to zip uptown for meetings.
The Holiday Inn Manhattan Sixth Avenue appeals to visitors who want the comfort and services of a chain hotel, but prefer to be out of the tourist zone, in a more local neighborhood. The option of a choosing a room rate with complimentary breakfast is popular with families who like the convenience of feeding the tykes before sightseeing.
