About Hotel 31
New York famously has the most expensive hotel rooms in the world. It’s far less known for options at the other end of the spectrum. Hotel 31 is a welcome exception. This budget hotel is a couple of blocks from the Empire State Building, offers free Wi-Fi and has well-maintained rooms. As one TripAdvisor user summed it up: “Great location, great value.”
Hotel 31 has the feel of a quaint European hotel, with dark-wood furnishings and patterned wallpaper. Rooms are individually decorated and come in a variety of sizes with the option of private or shared baths. Solo travelers appreciate the nicely priced single-bed rooms, while rooms with two double beds appeal to families or a quartet of friends traveling on low funds.
The hotel has no on-site restaurant, but who needs one? The surrounding neighborhood of Murray Hill is filled with affordable eateries. Fill up on juicy ribs at Brother Jimmy’s BBQ, fresh sandwiches and salads at Guy & Gallard or a beer or coffee at the many low-key pubs and cafes. For sightseeing, the hotel couldn’t be better situated. Head north to Grand Central Terminal and Bryant Park, south to Madison Square Park and the Flatiron Building and west to Madison Square Garden and Herald Square. Or for a change of pace, stroll east through non-touristy neighborhoods closer to the East River.

The hotel’s sister property is Hotel 17, near Union Square and Gramercy Park, whose old-fashioned interiors have inspired artists and filmmakers. The hotel appeared in the 1993 Woody Allen film Manhattan Murder Mystery and a pre-fame Madonna stayed here.
Hotel 31 is ideal for sightseeing visitors who want to be central – without breaking the bank. The varied rooms, including with single beds and two double beds, appeal to solo travelers and families.
There’s no restaurant on-site, but the surrounding neighborhood is filled with restaurants of varying prices and cuisines.
No room service, but the hotel can assist with ordering in from area restaurants.
