About Hotel Carter
Located in the heart of Times Square, the Hotel Carter gives budget travelers convenient access to the bright lights and attractions of Broadway. The 24-story, 700-room hotel is just down the block from the bustle of One Times Square, where the New Year’s Eve Ball drops.
For those wanting to take in a show, the Hotel Carter is also in the middle of the Theater District. Only a block east are luxurious shopping and cultural attractions like Rockefeller Center, Radio City Music Hall, the Museum of Modern Art, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Gucci, Bergdorf Goodman, Tiffany and Saks. With the busiest subway hub in the city underneath Times Square, the Hotel Carter is a train ride away from most of what New York has to offer.
The Hotel Carter has had a colorful history: Opening in 1930, the Hotel Dixie – it became the Carter in 1976 – celebrated the Old South. According to a vintage menu, “delightful cocktails” and “continuous entertainment” from big bands and torch singers could be found at the hotel’s Plantation Bar & Lounge. The Hotel Dixie even honored the Confederacy’s fallen soldiers by flying the Stars and Bars on Memorial Day, 1951. The hotel was also originally a multipurpose property: The Central Union Bus Terminal occupied the building’s basement until 1957; at its peak the depot handled 350 buses a day, using an innovative underground “turntable” to dispatch the vehicles. After the bus depot closed down, the garage was put to good use: An old postcard advertised the Hotel Dixie as “the Drive-In Hotel” with “Free Parking.”
The hotel even had its own small theater – 60 feet by 45 feet, 255 seats –that showed musicals and revues. Today, the Hotel Carter is best known as a budget hotel with no-frills amenities, including rooms with one or two beds, cable TV and full baths, which allow guests to spend their money on the entertainment right outside the doors.
The Hotel Carter is a popular destination for budget travelers looking for lodging convenient to many of the top tourist destinations in Manhattan.
