About Jumeirah Essex House
Looking north over the lush greenery of Central Park and surrounded by extravagant hotels on either side, the Jumeirah Essex House is a New York institution, dedicated to Art Deco elegance and quiet luxury.
The Jumeirah Essex House is located on Central Park South, the portion of 59th Street that runs along the southern end of Central Park. Pedicabs and horse-drawn carriages line up along Central Park South to take passengers through the park, and tourists from all corners of the world throng the sidewalks. To the east is the landmark Plaza Hotel (now mostly private residences) and the opulent shops of Fifth Avenue. To the west are the luxury stores of the Shops at Columbus Circle, the small, trendy restaurants of Hell’s Kitchen, and the performance spaces of Lincoln Center. The half mile south of the Essex House is perhaps the most famous and luxurious part of New York. On Fifth Avenue, Tiffany & Co., Bergdorf Goodman, and Saks Fifth Avenue stand shoulder to shoulder with St. Patrick's Cathedral, Rockefeller Center and the Museum of Modern Art. Sixth Avenue provides quick meals from popular chains like Le Pain Quotidien, while Seventh Avenue is home to Carnegie Hall and the Russian Tea Room. Broadway's famous theater district is only ten blocks south.
Built in 1929, the Jumeirah Essex House has been fully restored to its Art Deco glory, with chandeliers, marble floors and accents, artistically engraved bronze doors and period touches like old-style dial telephones. The detailed carpets in the hallways emit luxury and soak up sound, and the hotel's artist-in-residence program features the work of renowned artists like Mark Innerst, Atta Kim and Paula Hayes.
Rooms are decorated in a light, contemporary style with Art Deco touches, and offer panoramic Central Park or city views. All suites feature a sleeper sofa, making them a good choice for families, along with wireless Internet and flat-screen televisions.
Because its function space for conferences and meetings is limited, the Essex House has a more intimate atmosphere than a fully business-oriented hotel. Appreciating its private atmosphere as well as its luxury, celebrities and foreign dignitaries often choose the Essex for their New York visits, and New York families have fought to schedule weddings here for generations.
Many visitors are won over by the Essex's pet program, which offers a canine turndown service (including homemade treats made by the hotel’s Executive Pastry Chef, a miniature pop-up tent with fleece-lined bed and a fleece blanket) for its four-legged visitors. Also, the hotel’s concierges are familiar with New York City’s leash laws, pet-sitting facilities and best trails for walking your pet.
Jumeirah Essex House also offers a full-service fitness center and spa, with massages, facials, and pedicures. Room service is available, as well as dining in the newly remodeled South Gate restaurant, which features floor-to-ceiling windows looking out on the park.
The Jumeirah Essex House is a quiet luxury hotel that is good for families, travelers with pets, and business travelers. Families will enjoy the immediate access to Central Park (including its famous zoo and lakes) and the convenience of suites with sleeper sofas. Travelers with pets will appreciate the hotel's pet-friendly amenities. Business travelers will value the hotel's central location and the business center with full secretarial service and meeting rooms.
