About the New York Marriott East Side
The handsome and well-run New York Marriott East Side, rising high over Lexington Ave., is conveniently located near the office towers of Midtown and many of New York City’s big-name sights, including Rockefeller Center, the Chrysler Building, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Grand Central Terminal, Bryant Park and the New York Public Library. Greenery and modern art are also in the vicinity: the Museum of Modern Art and Central Park are both a comfortable stroll away.
The building, with its unique setback design, has an impressive history: It originally opened in 1924 as the Shelton Hotel, a bachelor hotel and athletic club, by the developer James T. Lee, who was the grandfather of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. And, while parts of the hotel still reveal its historic past, the rooms are fully modern and well-appointed (they underwent an enthusiastic renovation in 2007). The rooms are signature Marriott – polished, quality furnishings, comfortable beds with feather pillows – with an array of amenities, including flat-screen TVs, coffeemaker, designer toiletries and a newspaper delivered upon request.
The New York Marriott East Side also makes an effort to accommodate families, with complimentary cribs and rollaway beds (depending on the size of the room), a concierge who can recommend the best way to explore New York City with kids, including occasional special kid-friendly packages, coloring books on request and so on.
Did you know?
In 1926, when this was the historic Shelton Hotel, magician and escape artist Harry Houdini was lowered in an airtight coffin-like case to the bottom of the hotel swimming pool.
He remained underwater for an impressive 91 minutes.
Famed painter Georgia O’Keefe lived in the Shelton Hotel for several years.
Thanks to its Midtown location – and business amenities, including ample desks in the rooms – the New York Marriott East Side is popular with business travelers. The hotel also attracts plenty of tourists due to its location. The hotel also accommodates families, with occasional kid-friendly packages and complimentary cribs and rollaway beds. Additionally, you’ll find many brand loyalists here, taking advantage of Marriott’s well-regarded reward points system.
