About the Marcel at Gramercy
Done up in black, white, silver and yellow, the Marcel gives the relatively reserved Gramercy neighborhood a splash of color. One of its most charming features is the giant Jill Greenberg portrait of a baboon, whose head is turned as if to oversee the lobby. Guests can enjoy the art from a perch on a C-shaped black vinyl couch, a natural meeting place before a night on the town.
That night might just take you to the Marcel at Gramercy's cellar, home to the Polar Lounge nightclub. (Can't find it? Walk in the hotel's front door and hang a left.) This plush club maintains an arctic theme with cocktails including the Tundra (a mix of organic cucumber vodka, fresh lime, sugar, mint and a cucumber). If you're not up for that scene, try the hotel's 10th floor guest lounge and venture onto the seasonal terrace. It's open until 10pm, and has coffee and tea for guests.
If it's warm enough to be out on the terrace, you might also head down the street to Ralph's Famous Italian Ices. Sample either a water ice or a crème ice, and savor your treat on a walk around Gramercy Park. (Remember, that's walk around and not through – the park is private, but the perimeter is still one of Manhattan's lovelier and more tranquil spots.)
When reserving, ask for a room along 3rd Avenue as opposed to 24th Street – the ones on 3rd are larger. Also note that most of the hotel's 136 guest rooms have one bed, so travelers needing two should request a double deluxe room.
The Marcel at Gramercy is a stylish, centrally located hotel for travelers looking to avoid the congestion of Midtown. Stay here and you're still near subways and parks, restaurants and bars, Midtown and Downtown. The hotel also makes sense for anyone with business at the east side health-care facilities orbiting Bellevue and NYU hospitals. In terms of who'll be down the hall from you, the Marcel has enough aspirations toward coolness to make it an option for singles, though it's not nearly as scene-y as some other choices – families could stay here without feeling like they'd parachuted into a fashion shoot.
