  • About The New Yorker Hotel

When this art deco stunner opened its doors in 1930, it was Manhattan’s largest hotel—boasting 2,500 rooms, 92 telephone operators, 150 laundry staff, and an in-house barbershop with 42 chairs and 20 manicurists. Though The New Yorker Hotel shuttered in 1972, its modern-day reopening (and incorporation into the well-known Ramada chain) has it back in top form, with a $70 million refurbishment in 2009 offering updated rooms (of which there are now 916).

With a rich history of famous visitors from JFK, Fidel Castro and Joe DiMaggio to Hillary Clinton and Jennifer Hudson, it’s not hard to see why visitors still flock to this centrally-located midtown standby. The iconic red neon “New Yorker” sign on the side of the building has become a totemic part of the Manhattan skyline, immortalized in movies and TV shows for decades. The location is unbeatable, across the street from Pennsylvania Station and its annex Madison Square Garden, a few blocks from the Empire State Building and the New York Public Library, and a short walk to Times Square.

It’s also the closest hotel to the Jacob Javits Convention Center, so if you’re visiting for one of its many conventions, trade shows, or special events, you can’t beat The New Yorker for convenience.

Rooms are simple but clean and bright, and feature gold headboards, flat-screen TVs, Wi-Fi and city views. Add an illustrious history, expansive lobby, grand ballroom, crystal room, fitness center, business center and two in-house restaurants (Cooper’s Tavern for reliable American fare and the Tick Tock diner with its retro black-and-white checkered floors and booth seating) and you have a solid storied hotel in the heart of the city it is named for.
