About the W New York – Downtown
The Financial District is known for many things, but being cool isn’t necessarily one of them. With a reputation as an up-and-coming hot spot, the sleek W New York – Downtown bucks the neighborhood’s stuffy reputation. (You notice things are different as soon as you walk in the door – the wrong door. The one on the left is for the Residences at W New York – Downtown, high-end apartments that climb all the way up to the private 60th-floor roof.) Hotel guests take the door on the right to the elevators – or “lifts,” in the W’s Anglophile lexicon – up to the fifth-floor lobby, where the mirrored black-marble floors pulse with energy, sending the message loud and clear: This is no staid corporate hotel. And with a location on the doorstep of the World Trade Center construction site, the W New York – Downtown really feels like part of lower Manhattan’s post-9/11 rebirth.
The clean white-black-and-red rooms – with hyperbolic names like Wonderful, Spectacular, Cool Corner, Wow Suite and Extreme Wow Suite – range from 274 square feet to over 1,000, and each has 350-thread count Egyptian cotton sheets and goose down pillows, 37-inch flat-screen TVs, robes, slippers and iPod docking stations.
Don’t skip the third-floor Sweat gym – a deluxe facility that goes beyond treadmills and elliptical machines (though it has those, too) to include free weights, medicine balls, Swiss balls, a heavy bag and even a speed bag. If you just haven’t worked out enough aggression, you might walk down the street and strap on the gloves at the celebrated Trinity Boxing Gym.
Starting in the lobby, the W New York – Downtown has straight-on views of Ground Zero – the memorial is right outside the front door, though you can’t just show up. (Free advance reservations for the 9/11 memorial are required; book yours online.) The hotel is also quite close to one of lower Manhattan’s newest attractions: Zuccotti Park, the plaza that became famous as the epicenter of the Occupy Wall Street movement.
The W New York – Downtown attracts a young, hip crowd with money to spend – the kind of travelers who expect action in the lobby and who demand facilities with a real sense of style – and for whom the space doubles as a nightlife destination.

Living Room Bar & Terrace
On the fifth-floor lobby level is the Living Room Bar & Terrace, offering drinks and food in a space with stunning views of the World Trade Center site. The terrace itself is like a front-row seat to all of lower Manhattan.
BLT Bar & Grill
Downstairs is BLT Bar & Grill, which looks like a cross between a pickup-joint bistro and an upscale sports bar, and which serves a wide range of dishes for dine-in and room-service guests. The menu smartly has categories (and prices) for just about everyone. There’s a small group of salads starting at $11 and pizzas starting at $13, ramping up to $32 for sea scallops with fava beans and $36 for lamb chops. Steaks run to $79 for the Friday special: a porterhouse for two. Care for a drink? You can stay local with a New York–brewed Captain Lawrence Imperial IPA on draft, or be a high roller with specialty cocktails like Death in the Afternoon, a mix of prosecco and absinthe.
