About W New York – Union Square
As usual for this upscale Starwood chain, the W New York – Union Square hotel does not lack for confidence. Its lobby has soaring ceilings and a classy-casual Living Room Lounge, where guests can sip cocktails and play checkers. And its rooms include the Spectacular Room, the Mega Room, the Wow Suite and the Extreme Wow Suite, with color schemes tricked out in bold primary colors.
And yet despite all of that, the W New York – Union Square’s main attraction may be its location. It’s some of the best hotel real estate in Manhattan – a 270-room tower overlooking Union Square, one of New York’s great public spaces. The park has a tremendously popular Greenmarket (good for grabbing picnic trimmings) every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. Union Square’s train station is also one of the main hubs in the city south of 34th Street station, with a whopping seven subway lines, making transit incredibly convenient to just about anywhere in the city. On foot from the hotel, the Village is an easy walk south; Chelsea is just to the west; the Flatiron District awaits to the north; and the underrated East River Park Promenade a few blocks east.
The hotel itself isn’t too shabby either. The W New York – Union Square’s amenities include the one-two punch of the Sweat fitness center and the Bliss spa. Plus there’s Todd English’s restaurant Olives just off the lobby, and the acrobatic off-Broadway show Traces located directly across the street. With all of the action within the hotel and out in the park, guests won’t need to look far to be entertained.
Like other W hotels, the W New York – Union Square attracts a young, moneyed crowd – it’s stylish, for sure, and yet it’s not so über-hip as to make you self-conscious. Business travelers looking for an alternative to mauve corporate hotels will find relief here. So will families with teenagers who need enough action to feel cool in the big city. And pretty much everyone should enjoy the location, which is near fun and interesting things to do in every direction.

The W New York – Union Square’s main restaurant is the two-story and 100-seat Olives, part of the Mediterranean chain from celebrity chef Todd English. It does three meals a day, and it is not cheap: steel-cut oatmeal, for breakfast, costs 10 bucks. Then again, for just $4 more at lunch, you can have a charred squid salad with spicy broccoli, or a fig and prosciutto flatbread with a rosemary crust. (You might also splurge for the $24 Green Market Lunch, a three-course menu with ingredients sourced right outside the hotel at the fabulous Union Square farmers market.) Dinner leans toward pastas – including an actual fixed-price pasta tasting – and big proteins like ribeye, lamb porterhouse and pork chops.
