Before moving to its current site at Penn Plaza, Madison Square Garden was located at 8th Avenue between 49th and 50th Streets from 1925 to 1968, a block away from the Washington Jefferson Hotel. In 1999, artist Cosimo Cavallaro covered every wall and surface – including the furniture, television and lamps – of Room 114 in the Washington Jefferson Hotel (with permission) with melted cheese to create the installation Cheese Room.
Hell’s Kitchen – the neighborhood between 34th and 59th Streets, from 8th Avenue to the Hudson River, now also known as Midtown West or Clinton – was once a hub for criminals, tenements and factories, and was the setting for the musical West Side Story.
