About A Slice of Brooklyn Pizza Tour
A slice of authentic New York pizza, with its perfect sauce-to-cheese and grease-to-dough ratio, is not only an essential culinary experience but — no exaggeration here — the key to the very heart of New York. In a city with a pizza store on every block, finding the real deal can be a little daunting. Most in-the-know New Yorkers will tell you that it can only be found in Brooklyn (but then they might have to kill you!). Enter: A Slice of Brooklyn Pizza Tour led by native Brooklynite, Tony Muia. Part food-tour, part history lesson and full-on fun, Muia’s pizza-focused tour offers visitors the opportunity to experience some of New York City's finest pizza with many of Brooklyn's iconic landmarks and local hangouts along the way.
The tour begins in Manhattan, and the short journey to Brooklyn allows for a lesson in the art of the distinctive Brooklyn accent as well as historical facts about the sights you’ll pass along the way. There’s also plenty of time for local gossip, dished out by enthusiastic tour guides like the scoop from an old friend.
The first stop is the trendy neighborhood of DUMBO (an acronym for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass), where you can take in gorgeous waterfront views and snap photos of the iconic Brooklyn Bridge from the best vantage point around. You may even get the chance to see romance in full bloom, as this spot is a favorite with wedding parties and their photographers. Keep an eye on the waterfront and the other peeled for local celeb-residents like Anne Hathaway, Andy Roddick and Brooklyn Decker.
After a quick jaunt through the Brooklyn Bridge Park to work up an appetite, you'll head over to renowned neighborhood fixture and pizza institution Grimaldi's. The famed pizzeria's Neapolitan-style pies are such a draw that there’s an ever-present line stretching down the block outside; luckily, you won’t have to stand on that line because you’re with Tony and the A Slice of Brooklyn Pizza Tour! Inside, you can watch as pies are deftly slid into one of the few remaining coal-fired brick ovens in the city and savor a slice of the legendary pie that summons visitors from all over the world.
Back on the bus and heading deep into the borough of Brooklyn, you’ll learn about — and see clips of — famous movies like Goodfellas, Saturday Night Fever and The French Connection that were made in Brooklyn. At Bensonhurst’s L & B Spumoni Gardens pizzeria, participants will find a delectable Sicilian-style pizza and an authentic taste of old Brooklyn. Established in 1939, this family-owned pizzeria has been making pizza for four generations. If the weather — and your belly — permits, sit outside and follow your slice of Heaven/pizza with a creamy spumoni (a molded Italian ice cream).
The tour wraps up with a short journey through historic Coney Island, where you can walk along the boardwalk and snap some photos of old-timey rides like the Cyclone wooden roller coaster, which dates back to 1927. And on the ride back to Manhattan, you can settle into a comfortable food coma while enjoying a film montage of famous Brooklynites from past and present.
