About Discover Outdoors Hike & Wine Tasting
A glass of wine tastes so much better once you’ve trekked sweatily to get it. The Hike & Wine Tasting trip, hosted by the popular Discover Outdoors, celebrates two of life’s great pleasures—nature and wine—on a day trip from Manhattan.
The trip departs from Manhattan before heading towards the Hudson Valley. The four-hour hike takes you up 900 feet in elevation. Whip out the camera—from your high-up vantage point, the views are stunning, revealing wooded hillsides crowned by a bright-blue sky. The hike moves at a brisk pace, but you’ll also take breathers along the way, including a lakeside break, where you can eat lunch while enjoying views across the placid waters. Looking for an adrenaline surge? You also have the option of bouldering while on the trek. The guide is always on hand with tips and support. The guides are as knowledgeable and patient as they are enthusiastic, and have credentials of New York State Licensed Trail Guide, Wilderness First Responders or Wilderness EMTs.
Next stop: a local winery. Wind down after the hike among the vines, where you’ll sample everything from Chardonnay to Cabernet Franc, as well as sweet fruit wines.
A full day (approximately 10 hours)
Did you know?
Hudson Valley is home to the nation’s oldest continuously operated winery. The Brotherhood Winery (originally named Jacques Brothers’ Winery) was founded in 1837. It was allowed to continue to operate during the Prohibition, because it made sacramental wine for the Catholic Church.
The most widely planted grape in the Hudson Valley is the Seyval Blanc, which is a French-American hybrid grape.
Discover Outdoors is ideal for visitors who want to explore the great outdoors, but still be back in Manhattan by nightfall. The Hike & Wine Tasting trip is especially popular with wine lovers, as it culminates at a Hudson Valley winery. Like all Discover Outdoors trips, it caters to most skill levels, from novices to outdoor enthusiasts.
Good for kids?
The Hike & Wine Tasting trip involves an invigorating hike, so it appeals to older kids who can keep up with the rest of a trekking group. Only those of legal drinking age will be able to sample the wines at the winery.
