About Bike Central Park - Bike and Roll NY
Long the preferred transportation of eco-forward European cities, biking has caught on in Manhattan for its convenience factor, traffic-avoiding, and fitness promoting qualities. While the city is rolling out a public bike sharing program in 2013 (expect 7,000 bikes at 420 stations across Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens), the best option is still city-wide bike touring company Bike and Roll. With locations all over Manhattan—and forthcoming Brooklyn contracts—their expert guides will set you up with a great bike and an even greater appreciation for the city’s many sights.
Central Park, known for its romantic horse-drawn carriages and miles of walking paths, also happens to be a biker’s paradise. And with stations in two locations throughout the 843-acre grounds, Bike and Roll has got you covered if you’re hoping to cruise on two wheels. Meet at iconic Tavern on the Green near the West 67th Street entrance at one of three times (10:30am, 1:30pm, or 3:30pm) for a guided tour of all the park has to offer. Choose from a variety of daily-tuned, hybrid Trek bikes, strap on your helmet (provided by Bike and Roll, too) meet your experienced, certified guide for the day, and off you go.
The complete tour is about six miles and is suitable for beginner to experienced riders. Generally hillier than the rest of the city’s cycling offerings (like paved streets), expect a few peaks and valleys—nothing that your cheerleader of a tour guide won’t happily pep you through. You can also expect plenty of interesting stops along the way to catch your breath and learn a thing or two about the history of the park and its many features. With stops at Bethesda Fountain, Strawberry Fields, Cleopatra’s Needle, the Shakespeare Garden, the Swedish Cottage, and Belvedere Castle (yes, there is a castle in the park), the tour truly leaves no stone unturned. We have no doubt you’ll leave with new friends, pumping adrenaline, and a head full of little-known New York knowledge.
