About Shearwater City Lights Sail - Manhattan By Sail
The Shearwater City Lights Sail from Manhattan by Sail is a nighttime boat tour around New York Harbor in an elegant yacht that dates back to 1929. This 90-minute voyage gives passengers the chance to drift away from Manhattan's busy pace and crowded streets for a while, soaking up stunning views of New York City's glittering night skyline and famous landmarks from an entirely different vantage point.
The genteel Shearwater schooner departs from the fittingly upscale North Cove Marina, whose location adjacent to the World Financial Center provides great photo ops of this landmark and other iconic downtown buildings – including Freedom Tower (One World Trade Center) – before the sail even begins. Once aboard the Shearwater, passengers can settle in on the various benches and order a drink from one of the crew, as white wine, beer, soda and water are available for purchase.
With a capacity of less than 50 passengers, the Shearwater City Lights Sail provides a more intimate experience than some other sightseeing boat tours. Once the Shearwater makes its way out of the North Cove Marina and along the Hudson River, the captain will cut the motor and the crew will hoist the sails, making for a truly tranquil ride around New York Harbor. The late hour of the sail means that there is little boat traffic along the waterway, so passengers can bask in a quiet ambiance that seems far removed from the streets of New York City.
The Shearwater slowly circles the harbor, offering fantastic opportunities to take photos of the shimmering New York City skylines – as well as New Jersey – from many different angles. The yacht will glide past Ellis Island and hover for a bit in front of Liberty Island, giving passengers time to snap photographs of the illuminated Statue of Liberty, whose glowing torch and crown make for a dramatic display.
