New York, New York. The city that never sleeps — chaotic, overwhelming, expensive, yet utterly magical. For many, a first trip to NYC is a mix of movie moments and real-life surprises. Travel duo TwoPassportsOneDream captured exactly that in their video First Time in New York City! We Didn’t Expect This, sharing their fresh perspective on Manhattan.

First Impressions: Chelsea, Broadway, and Bagels

After a late-night arrival, the pair checked into the S on Henry Hotel in Chelsea. Their first surprise? Manhattan’s wide roads and sidewalks, so different from Europe’s narrow streets.

Exploring Madison Square Park and Broadway, they found the city cleaner and friendlier than expected. Breakfast was a true New York rite of passage: giant bagels loaded with smoked salmon, wasabi cream cheese, pastrami, and sauerkraut. Their verdict? “The best bagels we’ve ever had.”

Exploring Manhattan: High Line, Subway & Green Spaces

A walk along the High Line revealed art, greenery, and elevated views of Manhattan life. It felt like a hidden oasis above the chaos.

Next came the subway — something many first-timers dread. To their surprise, it was simple, stress-free, and only $3.25 per ride.

What impressed them most was the number of small public parks scattered across the city. From community movie nights to artist-only seating areas, NYC showed its softer side beyond Central Park.

Times Square & Broadway: A Bucket-List Moment

At Times Square, the energy was electric — street performers, glowing billboards, and nonstop movement.

The highlight of their trip? Seeing The Lion King on Broadway at the Minskoff Theatre. With front-row seats, they were stunned by the live orchestra, costumes, and powerful voices. “I almost cried five times,” one admitted.

Fifth Avenue, Central Park & Classic Eats

From Rockefeller Plaza to St. Patrick’s Cathedral, they ticked off iconic sights. They spotted Trump Tower, the ultra-thin skyscraper known as the world’s slimmest residential building, and finally stepped into Central Park — 840 acres of green relief framed by skyscrapers.

Food was another adventure:

  • $1 New York pizza slices near NYU.
  • McSorley’s Old Ale House, the city’s oldest pub, pouring only light or dark ales at legendary low prices.

Final Thoughts

For first-timers, New York City was more than they expected: friendlier, greener, and tastier than its reputation suggests. From bagels and Broadway to hidden parks and historic pubs, they left knowing they’d only just begun to scratch the surface of the Big Apple.
