Does bargain hunting for theater tickets this winter have to mean waiting in line outside in the cold at the TKTS booth in Times Square for last-minute deals? Not necessarily.
Did you know that you can get two-for-one ticket deals for just about every show on Broadway in advance without having to bundle up and wait in line outdoors? It’s true! Twice a year Broadway producers offer a deep 50% discount for just about every show on the Great White Way. But like all good deals, the offer isn’t forever. Ticket offers are only for performances between January 16 through February 4 and you have to act fast.
Broadway Week (which lasts close to three weeks) is a semi-annual sale that takes place in September and January–the two months of the year when Broadway shows see a slump in sales. It was the brainchild of the theatrical trade association The Broadway League and local tourism board NYC & Company. Since its inception in 2011, more than a million people have enjoyed the deep discount to over 150 unique productions.
How does it work?
It’s really simple. Go to the Broadway Week website for a list of the shows that are taking part. Click on the show that you want to buy. This will take you to that show’s ticketing website. Choose a performance between January 16 through February 4. The discount should be applied. But if you want to go directly to that show’s ticketing website, be sure to apply the code BWAYWK24 at checkout.
Do you have to buy in even numbers?
This depends on the ticketing service that the show you’re buying uses. Shows that use Telecharge, for example, require that you buy at least two tickets, but you can buy in odd numbers. Other rules apply for shows that use SeatGeek or Ticketmaster. Note that ticketing fees still apply.
Where are the seats?
Like most sales, there’s a slight catch. You usually won’t find seats at Broadway Week prices in prime areas of the theater or on the aisles. But if you don’t mind sitting off to the side a bit or in the rear of the theater, you can enjoy a good deal and a terrific show at the same time.
Upgrades
For bargain hunters with deeper pockets, Broadway Week offers upgrades to the best seats in the house for an additional $125 per ticket. Just visit the Broadway Week website, find the show you want to see, and click “buy with upgrade."
How fast do I have to buy?
Broadway Week tickets go on sale on January 9. Logically, the more popular shows will sell out sooner. If you have your eyes set on big hits like “The Lion King”, “Hamilton”, or “Wicked”, we suggest you choose your dates and act immediately.
